If the Pacific Ocean were the stage and Santa Barbara the auditorium, the Santa Barbara Riviera would be the balcony overlooking it all. In other words, looking to the north from the beach, the Riviera is the city’s backdrop. Stretching along the Santa Ynez Mountains foothills, this picturesque neighborhood extends from historic Mission Santa Barbara on the west, nearly to Montecito on the east.

Riviera Homes

 
Riviera homes – built in an eclectic mix of architectural styles -- traverse the hills, thereby giving most residents a view over the city to the ocean and islands beyond, or toward the mountains. Homes at the crest are fortunate to have panoramic views in both directions. Hilly, winding streets combined with the red tile-roofs of many Riviera homes create a distinctly European feel.

A Bit of Riviera History

 
Resting in a privileged spot on the Riviera, the recently rebirthed El Encanto Hotel has been a favorite retreat for the well-known and well-heeled since the 1920s. The history of the neighborhood’s development began in 1913, however, when an investment group purchased a block of land and created a housing tract. The following year, the Santa Barbara State Normal School of the Manual Arts and Home Economics (which later became UC Santa Barbara) established its Riviera campus. Three years later, Marymount School (now Riviera Ridge School) took up residence in a rather ornate Italian Villa, where it remains today. The combination of world-class vistas, charming homes, and European ambiance make Santa Barbara’s Riviera a highly sought-after neighborhood.
