The Mesa

Welcome to The Mesa

South of downtown Santa Barbara and with the ocean as its southern border, the city’s Mesa neighborhood provides the type of casual and relaxed yet active vibe perfect for families and college students. It is home to the campus of Santa Barbara City College and three public elementary schools, as well as Ledbetter Beach and Shoreline Park.

Shopping and Seasons

The Mesa’s lively and diverse retail hub hosts shopping, services and modestly priced restaurants enjoyed by the neighborhood’s residents. Due to its location and topography, the area enjoys winter temperatures as much as ten degrees warmer and summer temperatures often ten degrees cooler than those in nearby downtown Santa Barbara.

A Bit of Mesa History

Although the Mesa is one of Santa Barbara’s most recently developed neighborhoods, with modest mid-century and later homes, as well as larger homes along its coastline, there is a rich history here. Settled by the Chumash people as long as 6,000 years ago, the area was also the site of Santa Barbara’s first lighthouse, as well as once having a landing strip, an oil field, several mansions and farms.
