San Roque

Welcome to San Roque

Certainly one of Santa Barbara’s most family-friendly neighborhoods, San Roque offers numerous schools, churches, parks, and active homeowners associations. Shopping opportunities are plentiful and are anchored in La Cumbre Plaza, built in 1967 as Santa Barbara’s first major open-air shopping mall, as well as in retail destinations including Loreto Plaza and Five Points.

A Colorful History

Now a thriving and vibrant yet peaceful, neighborhood, San Roque -- also known locally as “Upper State” -- was once considered Santa Barbara’s badlands. That is exactly what it was from 1850 to 1860 thanks to the notorious Jack Powers gang that routinely menaced the stage route between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo before being driven out by U.S. Army troops.

San Roque Homes

While San Roque homes were constructed between the mid-1920s and mid-1960s, it was a post-WWII building surge that secured the area’s transition from primarily ranchland and farmland. That forty-year construction span, plus the significant amount of more recent residential rebuilding, redesign and renovation has resulted in homes displaying a broad range of architectural styles. It is also worth noting that virtually every San Roque home is just a short drive or walk from shopping, dining and services.
