Goleta

Welcome to Goleta

Just a dozen miles up the coast from downtown Santa Barbara, Goleta has long been known simply as "the Good Land" — a nod to Spanish missionary Father Crespi's description of the valley's fertile soil, mild climate, and abundant water. Today that same good land is home to UC Santa Barbara, the Santa Barbara Airport, and a fast-growing mix of neighborhoods that range from mid-century cottages to new infill construction, all just minutes from some of the county's best beaches.

From Lemon Groves to Tech Hub

Before it was a city, Goleta was an agricultural powerhouse. Former Presidio soldiers granted land by the Mexican government planted the state's first commercial lemon orchard here in 1875, and by 1947 the Goleta Lemon Association was processing fruit from 2,300 acres of groves. The post-WWII aerospace boom changed the valley's trajectory: the 1955 Kellogg Park subdivision — designed by noted Los Angeles architects Jones & Emmons — became Goleta's first major postwar housing tract, built for the engineers and workers flooding into the area's growing aerospace industry. Goleta didn't incorporate as its own city until 2002, and every fall it still celebrates its agricultural roots with the Goleta Lemon Festival.

Goleta Real Estate

Goleta's housing stock is as varied as its history — mid-century ranch homes in Old Town and around Kellogg Park, Spanish and Tudor-style houses on the older residential streets, and newer condos and townhomes near the tech corridor. Over the past year, homes here have typically sold between $1.1 million and $1.5 million, with larger homes and those closest to the coast regularly reaching $2 million or more.

Beaches, Butterflies, and a University Town

Goleta's lifestyle draws as much from the outdoors as from academia. UC Santa Barbara anchors the western end of the city, and Goleta Beach County Park is popular with families and paddlers alike. Ellwood Mesa, a 230-acre open space with ten miles of trails, hosts one of California's most significant monarch butterfly overwintering sites every winter at the Goleta Butterfly Grove. Santa Barbara Airport sits within city limits, and Camino Real Marketplace anchors everyday shopping and dining.
